Picture a perfectly round pond nestled in the forest, its basin so smooth and deep it looks like a giant ice cream scoop carved it from the earth. That’s essentially what happened – except the scoop was a massive chunk of glacial ice, and the carving took thousands of years. Kettle lakes are these remarkable depressions filled with water, created when huge blocks of ice broke off from retreating glaciers during the last Ice Age and became buried in sediment.
