Wilderness Skills Training Program Schedule 2007


If you enjoy being in the outdoors; cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, camping and improving your paddling strokes, then join us at Frontenac Provincial Park. The Wilderness Skills Program teaches outdoors enthusiasts through hands on experience valuable outdoor skills. The program has something for everyone; the beginners, the experts, and families. So plan on visiting us in 2006 and make the most of your outdoor adventures.

A detailed equipment list and program outline is available upon registration. Participants are requested to meet at the Trail Centre fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled start times of the presentation. The Presentation Fee is payable to the PRESENTER and the Provincial Park Daily Vehicle/Camping Permits can be purchased at the Park's Trail Centre or Self-Serve Kiosk. When calling to register for any of the programs, be sure to ask about personal equipment rentals.

Saturday, January 20
Winter Camping Trip Planning

Presented by: The Friends of Frontenac

Accurate pre-trip planning can minimize many of the discomforts associated with extended forms of backcountry travel during the winter. This presentation provides the novice and the experienced tripper with the opportunity to share ideas and concerns about low-impact winter camping and trip planning. Topics include; route selection and assessment, equipment construction and appropriateness, menu planning, physical fitness and conditioning, safety, and the different forms of winter travel. A portion of this presentation will be held out-of-doors, so please come dressed for the weather conditions and the trails. This is a prerequisite for those who wish to attend the Winter Camping Instructional Weekends. Register early - space is limited for this session. Please call (613) 376-3489.

Winter Camping Instructional Weekend #2

NOTE: Attending the Winter Camping Trip Planning session on January 20th is a prerequisite.These two separate weekends are designed to introduce participants to snow houses, tents and general winter camping skills. Learn how to stay warm, prepare meals and use a map and compass. An equipment checklist will be provided. Food is included in the course fee. Register early - space is limited for these sessions. Cost: $55.00 per person plus interior camping fee. Time: 10h00 Saturday to 15h30 Sunday. Maximum 12 persons. Register early!

Snowshoe Workshop/Walk

Presented by: Ed Grenda, and The Friends of Frontenac

Learn about the different styles of snowshoes, harnesses and snowshoeing techniques. Later go on a short snowshoe hike on nearby trails, led by Ed Grenda. Be prepared to go outside. Bring your lunch and snowshoes or contact rental agencies.

Historical Walk

presented by: The Friends of Frontenac

Join the Friends for a historical interpretive walk along Big Salmon Lake Road. This leisurely walk will be informative for those who have walked through the park and wondered what the significance was for the piles of rocks, a crumbling foundation, an old fence line or ruins. Meet at the Trail Centre at 10:30. Wear comfortable footwear, bring your lunch, drinks and bug repellant. Rain or shine.

Hike Leader Certification

presented by: David Armitage, Hike Ontario, Toronto.

The popular Hike Ontario Standard course for hike leaders provides excellent instruction in leadership, risk and incident management, hike planning, clothing and wilderness skills. Hike leaders from trail clubs, outdoor recreation students/teachers and naturalists are encouraged to attend.

Cost: $55.00 per person (plus park fee) includes a one year membership in Hike Ontario and training manual. Successful participants will obtain a certificate from Hike Ontario. Time: 09h00 to 16h00.

Saturday, May 5 to Sunday, May 6
Basic Wilderness First Aid Course

presented by: SOLO Canada/ Mark Halladay Emergency Services, Kingston.

This course takes you beyond standard first aid. You will be taught how to manage an emergency situation when help is more than a phone call away. This in-depth course includes patient assessment, trauma management, moving techniques, dehydration, managing and preventing heat and cold emergencies and coping in the wilderness. Dr. Frank Hubble of the North American Rescue Institute designed this course.

Cost: Course and certification $165.00 (G.S.T. included) per person plus park fee. Time: 08h30 to 16h15 each day (two day course).

Wilderness Navigation Using Map and Compass

presented by: The Friends of Frontenac.

Learn how to interpret and read topographical maps in order to find your way safely and confidently in the wilderness. Through a variety of practical outdoor exercises discover how to use a compass alone and with a map, magnetic declination, contour interval, setting a compass, following a bearing and triangulation. Come prepared for outdoor activities. Bring a safety whistle.

Cost: $20.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 16h00

Canoe Clinic

presented by: Cataraqui Canoe Club, Kingston.

This is an opportunity for novice and intermediate canoeists to upgrade their paddling strokes and practice canoeing skills. PFD's and safety equipment is supplied. A limited number of canoes and paddles available. Minimum age of 16, unless accompanied by an adult.

Cost: $10.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 10h00 to 16h00

Sunday, June 10
Introduction to Lightweight Backpack Camping

presented by: Walter Sepic, Firefly Adventures, Kingston.

This workshop will inform outdoor enthusiasts of useful backpack camping pre-trip planning skills with lightweight equipment selection, food selection, nutrition, hydration, water treatment, footwear, clothing, rain gear, packs and packing, tents, stoves, 1st aid kits, camping ethics and designing a trip. An emphasis will be placed on reducing the amount and weight of equipment while maintaining comfort and safety.

Cost: $30.00 per person, $50.00 per couple, plus park fee. Minimum age 12 yrs. Time: 09h00 to 16h00

Tandem and Solo Flatwater Canoeing Certification (ORCKA)

presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o'Lakes Canoeing & Kayaking, North Bay.

This course is a prerequisite for all subsequent canoe certification courses and is recommended for outdoor educators, trippers, teachers and parents. A practical focus with tandem and classic solo skill development is offered with experienced instruction in safe canoeing practices, rescues, equipment and environmental precautions. No experience is necessary. Successful candidates receive a badge and card. Meet at the Trail Centre with canoe, lifejacket/PFD and paddles.

Cost: $320.00 per person plus park fee. ($240.00 per person for Tandem A, B, C portions only; $100.00 per person for solo D only). Time: 09h00 to 17h30 each day (two day course)

Flatwater Kayaking Certification (Paddle Canada Flatwater)

presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o'Lakes Canoeing and Kayaking, North Bay.

This introductory course is a prerequisite for all subsequent kayaking certification courses. Participants are offered a practical focus with skills instruction, safe kayaking practices, equipment, injury prevention and rescues (wet exit and bow rescue one on one with the instructor). No experience is necessary. Successful candidates receive a badge and card. Meet at Big Salmon Lake dock/launch with kayak, lifejacket/PFD and paddle.

Cost: $150.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 17h30

Kayaking Deep Water Rescues & Rolling Clinic

presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o'Lakes Canoeing and Kayaking, North Bay.

This deep water scenarios clinic introduces participants to the most commonly used techniques for assisted and self rescues, including the Eskimo roll. Prerequisite: Flatwater Kayaking Certification (offered on July 7th). Participants will develop confidence in rescue situations with a practical focus on being the rescuer/rescuee and develop skills for self rescue in solo paddling scenarios. Meet at Big Salmon Lake dock/launch with kayak, lifejacket/PFD and paddle.

Cost: $125.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 15h30

Introduction to Fishing Workshop

presented by: Rick & Sally Blasko, Northern Country Outdoor World, Inverary. www.ncow.ca

Want a new past time or become a better angler? Join Rick and Sally’s excellent presentation about obtaining the proper equipment, locating fish, filleting, equipment maintenance and the latest in casting and retrieving techniques. After the lecture portion, you may practice your new found skills on Otter Lake. Some equipment will be available to use, or bring your own. Come prepared for outdoor activities. Bring your lunch, bug repellant, and sunscreen. This is Ontario Family Fishing Weekend where Ontario residents may fish with no licence. Register Early! Canoe Rentals nearby.

Sea Kayaking Level 1 Certification (Paddle Canada Level 1)

This two day course focuses on equipment, safety and skills development, including basic assisted and self rescues, as well as instruction concerning maps, routes and weather. Prerequisite: Flatwater Kayaking Certification (offered July 7th and on August 11th). Successful candidates receive a badge and card. Meet at Big Salmon Lake dock/launch with sea kayak, lifejacket/PFD and paddle..

Cost: $300.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 16h00 (each day of this two day course)

September 1 to October 31
The Frontenac Challenge

presented by: The Friends of Frontenac.

The Frontenac Challenge involves hiking all 160 kilometers of the park's trail network between September 1st and October 31st. To meet the Challenge, all you have to do is pick up a registration form at the Trail Centre and then set out to hike through the autumn splendour of Frontenac Provincial Park. Successful participants will receive a certificate at an Awards BBQ on Sunday, November 11th at 10h30. Those who complete the entire Challenge will be acknowledged on an honourary plaque in the Trail Centre. So come out and challenge Frontenac at its autumn best.
