Wilderness Skills Training Program Schedule 2004 (coming soon... 2005 schedule)


If you enjoy being in the outdoors; cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, camping and improving your paddling strokes, then join us at Frontenac Provincial Park. The Wilderness Skills Program teaches outdoors enthusiasts through hands on experience valuable outdoor skills. The program has something for everyone; the beginners, the experts, and families. So plan on visiting us in 2004 and make the most of your outdoor adventures.

Register early - space is limited for most of the sessions. Please call (613) 376-3489.

A detailed equipment list and program outline is available upon registration. Participants are requested to meet at the Trail Centre fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled start times of the presentation. The Presentation Fee is payable to the PRESENTER and the Provincial Park Daily Vehicle/Camping Permits can be purchased at the Park's Trail Centre or Self-Serve Kiosk. When calling to register for any of the Programs, be sure to ask about personal equipment rentals.

Saturday, January 24th
Winter Camping Trip Planning

Presented by: The Friends of Frontenac

Accurate pre-trip planning can minimize many of the discomforts associated with extended forms of backcountry travel during the winter. This presentation provides the novice and the experienced tripper with the opportunity to share ideas and concerns about low-impact winter camping and trip planning. Topics include; route selection and assessment, equipment construction and appropriateness, menu planning, physical fitness and conditioning, safety, and the different forms of winter travel. A portion of this presentation will be held out-of-doors, so please come dressed for the weather conditions and the trails. This is a prerequisite for those who wish to attend the Winter Camping Instructional Weekends.

Winter Camping Instructional Weekend #2

presented by: The Friends of Frontenac

These two separate weekends are designed to introduce participants to snow houses, tents and general winter camping skills. Learn how to stay warm, prepare meals and use a map and compass. An equipment checklist will be provided. Food is included in the course fee.

Cost: $55.00 per person plus interior camping fee. Time: 10h00 Saturday to 15h30 Sunday. Maximum 12 persons. Register early!


Saturday, May 15th to Sunday, May 16th
Basic Wilderness First Aid Course

presented by: SOLO Canada/ Mark Halladay Emergency Services, Kingston.

This course takes you beyond standard first aid. You will be taught how to manage an emergency situation when help is more than a phone call away. This in-depth course includes patient assessment, trauma management, moving techniques, dehydration, managing and preventing heat and cold emergencies and coping in the wilderness. Dr. Frank Hubble of the North American Rescue Institute designed this course.

Cost: Course and certification $165.00 (G.S.T. included) per person plus park fee. Time: 08h30 to 16h15 each day. (two day course)


Sunday, June 6th
Canoe Clinic

presented by: Cataraqui Canoe Club, Kingston.

There will be opportunity at this presentation for beginners and first time canoeists to upgrade their paddling strokes and to practice basic canoeing skills, including: canoe-over-canoe rescues, launching, and removing a canoe. Various makes and models of canoes will be discussed. Canoes/Paddles/PFD's are supplied.

Cost: $15.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 10h00 to 16h00

Introduction to Wilderness Canoe Tripping Clinic

presented by: Walter Sepic, Ryan Outdoor Education Centre, Wolfe Island.

There This clinic offers outdoor enthusiasts an excellent opportunity to learn, view or try useful canoe camping pre-trip planning skills - equipment selection, food selection, campfires versus stoves, water purification, camping ethics, canoe paddling/ portaging and emergency response. Meet at Trail Centre with canoe/paddles/PFD’s.

Cost: $10.00 per person (family rate - $20.00) plus park fee. Time: 09h00 a.m. to 16h00


Saturday, June 26th
Moccasin Workshop

presented by: Survival in the Bush, Inc.

For individuals interested in mastering the art of making their own leather moccasins. Participants will learn to identify different types of leather and their characteristics; discuss various tanning methods; how to utilize specific tools of the trade; as well as techniques needed to complete a pair of moccasins. All tools, leather, and sinew are supplied. Patterns provided range from children's to man's extra large.

Cost: $65.00 per person (plus G.S.T.) plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 16h00

O.R.C.A. Tandem A,B,C Flatwater Canoe Certification

Course presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o’Lakes Canoeing & Kayaking, Hartington for the Quinte Field Naturalists, Belleville.

This course is a prerequisite for all subsequent canoe certification courses and is recommended for outdoor educators, trippers, teachers and parents. Participants are offered a practical focus with tandem instruction in safe canoeing practices, rescues, equipment, and environmental precautions. No experience necessary. Successful candidates receive a badge, card, and registration in O.R.C.A. Meet at the Trail Centre with canoe, lifejacket/PFD and paddles.

Cost: $145.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 08h30 to 19h00


Sunday, June 27th
Map and Compass Skills

presented by: Survival in the Bush, Inc.

This course deals with the basics of using some of the common types of maps, with emphasis on topographic maps,the use of a map and compass and wilderness navigation on land and water. The workshopvwill be practical and stresses point to point orienteering.

Cost: $65.00 per person (plus G.S.T.) plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 16h00


Saturday, July 10th
C.R.C.A. Flatwater Kayaking Certification Course

presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o'Lakes Canoeing and Kayaking, Hartington.

This course is a prerequisite for all subsequent kayaking certification courses. Learn safe kayaking practices, equipment, injury prevention and rescues (wet exit and bow rescue) A practical focus with basic skills instruction is offered. No experience is necessary. Successful candidates receive a badge, card and registration in C.R.C.A. Meet at Big Salmon Lake dock/launch with kayak, lifejacket/PFD and paddle.

Cost: $105.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h30 to 16h30

Introduction to Sea Kayaking Course (C.R.C.A. Level 1 certification)

presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o’Lakes Canoeing and Kayaking,Hartington for the Quinte Field Naturalists, Belleville.

This course is a practical focus on equipment, safety and skills development, including basic self and assisted rescues, as well as maps, routes and weather. Participants must have the C.R.C.A. Flatwater Kayaking prerequisite to attend this course. Meet at Big Salmon Lake dock with your own sea kayak, lifejacket/PFD and paddle.

Cost: $210.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h00 to 16h30 (each day) (two day course)


Sunday, August 15th
Basic Kayaking Safety & Rescues Clinic

presented by: Sheila Ritter, Land o’Lakes Canoeing and Kayaking, Hartington for the Quinte Field Naturalists, Belleville.

Do you know what to do if you or your paddling friend gets into trouble? This clinic will focus on essential rescue techniques in shallow water and applying the skills in realistic deep water. A paddling tour is included. Meet at the Big Salmon dock/launch with sea kayak, lifejacket/PFD and paddle.

Cost: $45.00/person plus park fee. Time: 10h00 to 16h00


September 1st to October 31st
The Frontenac Challenge

presented by: The Friends of Frontenac

The Frontenac Challenge involves hiking all 160 kilometers of the park’s trail network between September 1st and October 31st. To meet the Challenge, all you have to do is pick up a registration form at the Trail Centre and then set out to hike through the autumn splendour of Frontenac Provincial Park. Successful participants will receive a certificate at an Awards BBQ on Sunday, November 7th at 10h30. Those who complete the entire Challenge will be acknowledged on an honourary plaque in the Trail Centre. So come out and challenge Frontenac at its autumn best.

Saturday, September 25th
Wilderness Navigation Using Map and Compass

presented by: The Friends of Frontenac Park.

Learn how to interpret and then read topographical maps in order to find your way safely and confidently in the wilderness. Through a variety of practical outdoor exercises discover how to use a compass alone and with a map, magnetic declination, contour interval, setting a compass, following a bearing and triangulation. Come prepared for outdoor activities. Bring a safety whistle.

Cost: $20.00 per person plus park fee. Time: 09h30 to 16h:00


Take a Nature Walk with the Friends of Frontenac

Bring your family on these short leisurely walks to examine the plant and animal life in the Park. Except for the Dawn Bird Walk, meet at the Trail Centre at 12h30. Bring your binoculars, drink, snack, and wear sturdy shoes.
